Wellcome Rickie. A lot of members of this site are understanding quite well english. So don't hesitate to post in english if you have topics or questions of interest for you and if you think that somebody here can answer either in french or even in english.

I will post if I have some questions, or comments on any threads. I work with Glenn Saunders and his team on playtesting new PzC and MC games and hope that I can contribute to answering questions or problems that are raised here.

I have also worked on a scenario editor that is available at the Blitz club and can provide a link, or updated files, if anyone is interested. It allows easier editing for some scenario data and other items that can't be edited in the game editor. I bring this up as I see there are some great scenarios being worked on here.

I look forward to making new friends here also!

Thank you!

I think some players would like test a new system. They want under a allocation point scheme edit scenarios where the opponents has no idea on the type of troops they will meet. Each player will secretly by spending a number of points compose his own army. His opponent will do the same. The game will start with no information on OOB's opponent. Do you think that your scenario editor could be helpful for this specific application ?
I have also for you a question. Do you know what will be the next release of the Panzer Campaigns series and when the play will be release ?

RickyB
26/02/2004, 20h50
I will have to give the editor idea some thought. As it is right now, no, my editor won't help. :( . However, I may be able to come up with something. I think the main point of the idea, from what I have read in the thread and your post, is as follows:

1. Formations in an OOB will be given some "value".
2. Each player will get to pick units to make up a pre-determined value.
3. An existing map would be selected or a new sub map created.
4. Each player would deploy his units? Or would they be laid out through a program for each side - harder to do in a reasonable manner but not impossible if the units are out of contact.

Regarding the next game after NGP'85, I know the one that is likely to come out. However, it is not ready. I have seen some posts here or at PC4WAR on games people want to see that cover this one, but that is all I can say or Glenn S. will hunt me down and break my legs :o . As it isn't ready, nobody can even guess yet as to when it will be released, but it is at least a couple of months away still.

The players will be responsible for the deployment of their units. A sub map taken in the existing Panzer series maps will be used. We think that this system will be particulary adapted for competition and tournaments.
I understand that you want maintain secret the new developments which are in the pipe. I have tried just in case. On this forum we have been a little disappointed by the last releases as Sicily or Market Garden. We hope that the new release will reach the level of Kharkov,Tobrouk, Kursk, Normandy or Smolensk which are the most popular here.

is it at the moment or will it be possible in a near future (2004-2005) to have a map editor, so as to be able to create/add new maps?

Sorry Flavius, but I doubt it. I don't know anything more than what has always been said, which is that there will be no map editor. It might change when the series is ended, but even then I don't know.

So the big thing would be to create a way to merge files from the opponents into one scenario file that would then be used to start the game. I think the best thing would be to have the person running the tournament, or an independent person, merge the files from the players, start the first turn with the first player password so neither player can accidentally see the setup, and get the game going. Merging the files would be easy. Would a player be able to buy entrenchments too, or just units from the OOB? Trenches and bunkers and all go in a different part of the scenario file than the units, so I wrote a utility to merge the files I would need to know about that part.

As to the recent games, I think I agree in many ways. I only have very limited play time with Sicily myself, one game. Market Garden I agree with - I played the campaign against anothe player and he cleared all my Germans off the maps by the end of turn 65 - very boring. As a result, I have created an updated campaign at the Blitz that gives the German player a better chance to hold on in the middle map by adding in very small reinforcing units to keep a protection zone on the map edge in play, and a couple of corridors for the Germans to use on the east edge. Also, it fixes the 101st Abn at night to limit their movement around the map. I am playing it now as the Allied player and it is different, and I think more balanced so far.

But this next one will be a big change from those 2, and from some of the massive east front battles. I think you guys will enjoy the situation.

Thanks Rickie if you can write this utility. In case of a tournament the judge will take of care of the merging of the files coming from the 2 players. For fortifications ans entrenchments if it's feasable it will be great to had this option too. I think it will be a great improvement to have a system where the players could design their own armies on a cash system based on the value of the material and troops.

With Laurent ( administrator of this forum ) I have played one game each on Sicily and Market Garden. On Market Garden we have stopped when all the german troops hve been destroyed south of Nijmegen and all the british paratroops destroyed around Arhnem. I have loaded the new scenarios you have designed but not yet played with.
With Siciliy the rythm of the campaign is too slow due to the very difficult terrain. Perhaps a rythm of one turn every 4 hours could improve the game.
Now I am playing on 2 campaigns on Koursk ( one with the germans and one with the russians), one campaign on Kharkov 43 with the Marko's scenario and we have just started a campaign on Gazala.
I am glad to know that the next release will be on the east front. The range of possibilities is still very large from operation Saturn to operation Typhoon or less known battles as Velikhe-Luky or Crimea.
OK wait and see !

Hi Rickie, welcome on board ! :D

As half the guys here, I'm a wargaming vet' stating in the late 70's.

A debate we've had here on HPS games was about options in the games.

Would you personnaly recommend options for us with explanations on their value in the game, and tell us which of them you desagree with ?

It seems that the games results may be highly dependent on the options you may pick.

What's your opinion on that ?

hey Ricky between 1990/1996 I create on system " Amirauty " of paul bois, a south west pacific campaigns (army / naval / air) with 16 players.

I keeped the documentation ...

what do you think of these 3 battles.

1 - Leyte Battle 44 (large campaigns possible)

2 - New guinea 42/43 (very hard for the map)

3 - Guadalcanal 42 (with perhaps bougainville)
small one like market garden , good idea marketing for US market, and i have plenty of doc and the game " operation shoestring of GMT games 1990)

Moise, I am glad Terminus gave a good phrase for what I wrote, as I didn't have any idea how to describe it. Thank you Terminus :) . I have heard Omaha can be very emotional. Those men, and the others that fought including the Resistance, definitely deserve honor.

I have never heard of Amirauty, but it must be able to do a lot. Your battles sound good, with the land, sea and air all important to the battles. I can not think of others where the 3 forces all were important.

No, sorry, you misunderstand. I was trying to say the next game will NOT be like the big east front battles, rather than it would be one. It will be smaller in size than battles like Kursk and Korsun, although the map is very large. It could be any of the fronts, so in your other thread don't bet on it being east front! Think smaller in units, although still large, but big in map. The operation covered has a lot of actions and I think will have some great actions and a couple of campaign games, with variations.

I like how it is playing compared to testing MG.

Regarding MG, I don't know if my changes will fix the campaign completely, but it should help. Unfortunately, I think the way that the games work is that the attacker has too easy of a job, making the defenders lose too quickly. So the 1st British Airborne are in a tough position as the Germans can concentrate on them and crush them. I can't think of anything to help that.

I will work on this. It should be very easy, it might take me 2-3 weeks in my spare time. I have too many games going on along with testing, or I could do it in a couple of days.

Thank you Clayroger. A lot of long time players here, it feels very good.

Regarding optional rules, we have the same debates over at the Blitz club :D . Personally, the one thing I will always try to use are the default fire rules for the game, especially indirect fire. I once played the campaign for Kharkov 42 and my Soviet opponent chose the alternative indirect fire. The game ended very soon because the Soviet losses were extremely high. So I say always the game default fire rules. I also strongly prefer that locking ZOCs be off. From there, I like artillery setup, recon spotting although it rarely makes a large difference in play, and either explicit supply or virtual supply trucks. Otherwise, I am generally very open, only the first 2 really matter to me.

Next Panzer Campaigns, big map ?
Opération Marita ? B)

RickyB

Marita, and Merkur, could make a good combination game. One further hint, this being a French club and all. There is at least 1 French unit present in the game. Of course, that really does not eliminate too many battles. It could be the Groupe de Chasse Normandie-Niemen on the east front, the Free French units at Bir Hacheim, French units in Norway, France, Italy.

Anyway, I have probably gone too far on this, as the current game being tested may not be the next one to come out.
