En fouillant les forums américains je viens de tomber sur cet excellent article qui à mon avis résume bien la situation sur ce sujet important.

i use combined or splited units in the following way:
1. combined:
--> for attack always, better benefits.
--> for defend on hotspots always, splitted units are disrupted to fast.
--> for advance over bridges, you never know what you expect.
--> for assaults always, you should attack at hex stacking limit, so you can combine the units too.
--> for digging in if the time is limited by an enemy advance, is much faster.
--> for refreshing if fatigue is over 200.
--> for recon, so you can withdraw in splitted formation to prevent encirceling (depends on the situation)
2. splitted:
--> to dig in if i have enough time (preparing a second defence line in the rear area).
--> protect my flanks if i have not enough combined units or other units to do this job.
--> to encircle isolated, disrupted, overruned units in my reararea.
--> screen and claen a area comlete from enemy units.
--> to protect bridges in the rear.
--> to protect supply depots (digging in with engineers)
--> to protect supply sources (sometimes)
--> i split armor units if they have passed a hole in the enemys frontline. sometimes the infantry left and right of the front hole can be hinderd to withdraw and can be encirceled easy without massive forces.
